Tavira and the Eastern Algarve
The
historic fishing town of Tavira is only is only 10km away (10 minute
drive) and is full of traditional Portuguese charm. Founded in 400
BC by the Moors, Tavira sits between the gently flowing Rio Gilao
and is one of the most unspoilt coastal towns on the Algarve boasting
a Roman Bridge, its own castle, plus 35 ancient churches. Numerous
cafes, bars and restaurants line the river, public gardens and quiet
squares, offering an array of traditional patisseries and fresh
fish dishes.
The thriving market town of Loule
contains the ruins of a Moorish castle, the thirteenth-century Gothic
Igreja Matriz church, together with excellent restaurants serving
traditional cuisine and a bustling covered market.
Olhao,
a fishing port, has a lively market every morning along the waterfront
offering an impressive variety of fresh fish for sale. Also worth
a visit is the old town of Faro.
The palace of Estoi and the Roman
mosaics at Milreu are also within easy reach as well as the resorts
of Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura.
The Spanish town of Ayamonte is
only a short 28km drive away and the broad Rio Guardiana marks the
border between the eastern Algarve and Spain. Just 45km’s
scenic drive up the Guadiana River you will arrive at the picturesque
town of Alcoutim. Alcoutim has a long history and a wonderful castle
which dates back to the fourteenth century.
Beaches
Ilha de Travira is a 10 minute drive away and is one of the best
beaches in the Algarve. Reached by a short ride in a charming ferry
(for a euro return!) you will discover wonderful golden, sandy beaches,
beach bars and restaurants on the island. Most beaches are naturist
friendly.
Santa Luzia village next to Tavira also has the beautiful beach
of Barril, situated in a nature reserve and reached by a miniature
train.
Within the Algarve there are over
100 beaches all within between 20 mins and an hour’s drive
away.
Golf
There are a number of golf courses in the area. Benamor golf (www.golfbenamor.com)
course near Cabanas is 15 km from the house, and the newest golf
course, Quinta da Ria (www.quintadariagolf.com)
another 10 minutes further down the road. Castro Marim boasts an
18 hole golf courses is only 20 mins away.
The more famous courses at Villamoura
are all a 40 minutes drive away on the motorway.
